Review: Max Payne
by Daniel Khoo

"Oh my, here it comes!" I thought to myself as I grabbed a few popcorns out of the bucket that was on my lap. Every single character on the big screen slowed down to a near halt as we saw bullets after bullets being released from their chambers - each flying wildly into the air, while some end up hitting stray targets. The entire cinema remained in a single silence as the scene was being played out.

No, there wasn't a lag in the timeframe. It was Max entering 'bullet time', a concept that originally burst onto the PC games world while riding on the success of the Max Payne series. We had never seen anything like it before and its introduction took many of us by storm. We were totally in love with it.

If you did not already know, Max Payne is a computer game character brought to life on the silver screen. Mark Wahlberg stars as the main hero of the show, a detective who decides to seek out the people responsible for brutally killing his wife, baby and his partner - although there remains some doubt as to whether he fitted perfectly into the role.

His misadventure saw him teaming up with Mona Sax (Mila Kunis, from Forgetting Sarah Marshall), who was also out for blood after hearing about her sister being murdered. Death by chopping her up into pieces? Simply a work of a madman!

Hell, even Ludacris (yes, the rapper) gets a role as Jim Bravura, an internal affairs agent. Not too solid performance from him, in my opinion.

Prior to the show, I had read some comments about how Wahlberg's acting was similar with that of a stoner. But here's my thoughts: He did pretty well in portraying Max Payne. I didn't expect someone of a chirpy or talkative persona such as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) or whatsoever. His dark and enigmatic presence does make him a force to be dealt with.

The point is that Max Payne just had his family and his partner killed before his very eyes - which obviously meant that his world was totally upside down. It makes sense if he was all serious, frowning or for that matter, stoning.

The setting of the movie was pretty good as well, with producers choosing the color contrast very carefully to match the gloomy-like scenario of the game. If it isn't raining, it is snowing! Everything looks very depressing and dull, which kinda reminded me of the show Seven Sins.

There are some minor plot twist during the show, with betrayals and so forth. If you wondered why there was an angel with wings on the poster, I'd say there is a pretty good explaination for it.

A great deal of the show was film with an incorrect focus on the camera lens, which meant that the audience would regularly see blurred vision on the screen. Some people may think of as an error on the producers side, but I reckon that it was purposely meant to be done that way.

Well, the producers were trying to maintain the comic-like feel of the original game, where everything looks a little blurry and shady. I can't say that they've done a bad job at all. Now, the only problem I had was that there weren't enough gunfights! It would be great if they were to do something like the Matrix's lobby scene, but improvise on that. Sadly, there wasn't even a satisfying amount of 'bullet time' moves to go around. As a Max Payne fan, I am somewhat disappointed.

The first half of the show didn't had much action in it as the time was spent unveiling the story line - alot of detective work was done. So if you're not the type that can stand long talks and dramatic investigations, don't bother with this show. Ending wasn't really satisfying at all - it felt as though everything was just rushed through.

I was only there because I was a fan of the game. Nothing more.

Zuma Nesta Who?
By Ooi Li Hsien

Ever wondered about the meaning behind your name?

Newborn Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale was born on Thursday August 21st 2008 to proud parents singer cum actress Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, and how he got his name is still an interesting guessing game!

By naming their newborn son Zuma Nesta Rock, Gwen Stefani, 39, and Gavin Rossdale, 41, ‘have proven decisively that they're masters in choosing names that are both highly unusual and carry a lot of personal meaning’ says baby name expert Pamela Redmond Satran to Usmagazine.com.

Rumour has it that the name Zuma derives from Zuma Beach in Malibu, where, according to a profile of the guitarist and solo singer, Gavin Rossdale came to realisation that began his career.

"He was standing on Zuma Beach in the early morning after working all night as a production assistant on a music video and was quoted as saying he realized he was wasting his time. He drove up the coast, slept in his car, and started making the moves that would launch his career."

Gavin and Gwen with son, Kingston

Nesta, meanwhile, was Jamaican musician Bob Marley's first name before an immigration official switched it with his middle name, Robert.

"This name obviously links to big brother Kingston's and is another nod to Jamaica and reggae," cited Satran.

And then there's Rock. When in her band ‘No Doubt’, Gwen Stefani and her crew's third album was called "Rock Steady, which may be a possible source of inspiration.

Zuma joins the couple's two year old son, Kingston James McGregor Rossdale. The family now resides in London. The couple have been married since September 2002.
Gavin Rossdale also has a 19 year old daughter, Daisy Lowe from a previous relationship.

Shakespeare with a twist
By Rachael Wong.

Love & Beauty

On the 18th till the 21st of September, the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) staged a play about love and romance. It isn't just any love drama but it has got a twist of Shakespeare in it.

While many of us have forgotten Sonnet 18 we had learnt in school for SPM, the director of the play, Christopher Ling, and his team that put this together, the Theatre for Young People (T4YP) Ensemble have not. In fact, they included 21 of Shakespeare's sonnets in this contemporary play, proving to us that Shakespeare is timeless and is still relevant.

The story is about a young man who was mesmerised by this girl. He was in love with her but he was just one of the guys in her life. The story is told through acting, singing and various multimedia presentations. It's truly something new, at least for me. There were also a couple of comic relief scenes, speaking of love while including recital of the sonnets. Many these ideas came from the creativity of the ensemble who wrote different parts and pieced them together in the play.

There are many more plays staged at KLPAC and students like used should grab this opportunity to make full use of our student cards to entitle us to cheap student rates and discounts. For more information, go to http://www.klpac.com/.

It also links you to similar website for the same purpose of laughing at stupidity at its best.

Some of the funny things in the website include ‘how to spot annoying McCain and Obama supporters’, ’11 dumbest things cartoon have taught us’, la paguena Sarah Palin’, and ‘people doing very stupid things’.

by Jennifer Soh

Hollywood couples always get the limelight when it comes to marriage, but Naz and Sheahnee Iman Lee’s mixed culture wedding certainly proves that Malaysia is “Truly Asia”.

It is no longer a secret. Actor and host, Nazrudin Habibur Rahman, or more commonly known as Naz, 30, and NTV7’s 7 Edition newsreader, Sheahnee Iman Lee, 29, got married recently.

“Sheahnee and I both have mixed blood,” explains Naz. “I’m Malay-Chinese-Indian while Sheahnee is of Chinese and Australian descent.” It was only fitting, then, for them to hold a wedding that was rich in multi-cultural elements.

On March 9, 2008, Naz and Sheahnee took their friendship to the next level by getting engaged.

“On the 9th of March, I converted to Islam and chose the name Sheahnee Iman Lee. The ceremony that was held at Naz’s family residence was strengthened by our engagement bond,” said Sheahnee, who produces the second season of Captains.

On June 26, 2008, the couple took their vows at the Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS), Klang, with a one time lafaz and with both of their immediate families as witnesses.

The akad nikah ceremony ended with lunch, and in the evening, a doa selamat ceremony took place at Naz’s family home.

Newly weds: Naz and Sheahnee

A small and intimate inai ceremony was held at Naz’s family home in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur on July 6. During the ceremony, the bridegroom’s side presented 11 hantaran trays, while the bride’s side presented 9. In keeping with a traditional Chinese belief that the number 8 brings luck in life, the wang hantaran was a sizeable amount of RM8,888.

Besides that, the bridegroom’s side of the family also presented a set of jewelry that included a pair of earrings, a locket, and a white gold ring to Sheahnee.

Happily married: Naz and Sheahnee, surrounded by relatives

Later, a tea ceremony, which is a traditional Chinese custom, was held at Sheahnee’s family residence Bukit Raja, Klang.

On July 8, 2008 the persandingan ceremony was held at the Perdana Grand Ballroom, Dewan Perdana Felda, Kuala Lumpur at 8:00 p.m.

Over 1,000 guests consisting family members and friends were present at the Court Yard Garden. Well-known make-up artist, Nurul Shukor, was responsible for making sure that the couple looked great on their wedding day, and the happy couple wore red and cream traditional costumes designed by Wan Huzairil.

Naz and Sheahnee Iman Lee: The couple of the month

“I thank Naz’s family because they helped a lot in preparing the wedding,” said Sheahnee.

Naz and Sheahnee’s reception ceremony was a star-studded event, thanks to the presence of their celebrity friends, including Ning Baizura and her husband, Omar Sharif Christopher Layton Dalton (Omar), Harith Iskandar, Daphne Iking, Cheryl Samad, Zizan Nin, Elaine Daly, Tony Eusoff, Yasmin Yusof, and many more.

Being married is only just the beginning for Naz and Sheahnee, and the two will now face new challenges in life. However, Naz looks forward to sharing his future with his new wife. “I’m ready face married life,” he explains optimistically. “What’s most important is that I be a good husband who will guide Sheahnee in learning about islam.’

“We will continue to hold firmly on to Islamic teaching,’ adds Naz. ‘I pray that our marriage will go on until the end of time.’

The couple had their 5-day honeymoon at the Pangkor Laut Resort, Pulau Pangkor from the 14th of July, before they returned to work as usual on July 22nd, 2008.

In conjunction with Eid Al Fitr, NTV7 will be airing Sheahnee and Naz’s wedding footage entitled When Love Knocks on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.
