UM Going Green
A Campus Environmental Project
By Rachael Wong
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Rafiah Salim, Vice-Chancellor of UM, launched an Environmental Project for the whole campus yesterday at the National Day Parade in UM.
This three-month project is a competition in which every residential college and faculty will have to come up with plans to take care of the campus environment and go green.
The university will be providing all residential colleges and faculties with RM2,000 each to help them get started with this project. Datuk Rafiah said, "You can do whatever you want. I want to see your creativity." Some of the plans suggested are tree-planting, keeping the environment clean and recycling.

At the end of the three months starting from 1st of September, a panel of judges will choose the best project. The first prize winner will receive RM10,000 and the consolation prizes are RM1,000 each.
It is compulsory for all colleges and faculties to participate. Datuk Rafiah Salim urges the people of UM to go for the best and come up with creative ideas.
This project is held in support of the effort of the going green trend where organisations, private or government, are encouraged to plant more trees or make our environment greener to solve the problem of global warming. While other parts of the world are doing their part in combating is worldwide issue, UM has launched this project in hopes that its students and lecturers will see the importance of playing their part in making our world a greener, cleaner place.
